BIG DIPPER by studio glithero

BIG DIPPER (2007) creates candle-wax chandeliers by repeatedly dipping wicks into molten wax. Inspired by the traditional technique of candle making, the machine resembles a chandelier with two ring-shaped tiers that are counter-balanced to move up and down using a pulley system. On each large ring, twelve smaller rings are suspended creating a framework for configurations of looped of wick, which are one-by-one dipped into drums of melted wax, forming layers until they grow into a chandelier of eight candles. Because the process is unpredictable, each chandelier is unique.
In Big Dipper, an audience can witness the complete life of a product, from the moment the chandeliers are conceived until the moment they burn and perish.

Mazzo

by Concrete Architectural Associates

"Five materials determine the ambiance of the raw and honest interior design: power floated concrete, chipped brickwork, stone, pinewood and raw steel. The first three materials are part of the shell of the building; all the new materials are steel and wood. The window frames in the cupboard and the mezzanine floor in the front of the restaurant are completely made of raw steel. The steel beams and columns are exposed and the extra floor is provided with an untreated expanded metal mesh. The use of honest and simple materials doesn’t distract the guests’ eye and underlines the fact that the restaurant focuses on the food."

DOUG AITKEN
b 1968 in Redondo Beach, California (USA); 1986–1987 studied at Marymount College, Palos Verdes, CA; 1987–1991 studied at the Art Center College of Design, Pasadena, CA. Aitken lives and works in Los Angeles (USA). Aitken belongs to a generation of artist that enriched the presentation of the medium of video. Operating in a realm between popular culture and media art, his works reveal a wealth of audiovisual intensities and suggestive powers, and with complex imagery and associations consistently approach philosophical questions addressing nature and civilization as well as people and their relationship to time and space. Obsessed with the idea of present time, Aitken refers to his films and installations as being pure communication. In the process, he utilizes the vocabulary of Hollywood and advertising films. Alongside his freelance activities as artist and photographer, Doug Aitken is also known for his video clips, completed for artists such as Iggy Pop and Fatboy Slim.

BRENT COMBER
Shattered Sphere
"I made all of my pieces from wood that I salvaged from demolition sites around Vancouver. My material now comes from several environmentally friendly sources. But while my wood choices are in keeping with the precepts of sustainability, this is incidental rather than intentional. I simply want to use wood that best suits my purposes: unprocessed wood with cracks, bark sinews, knots, and swirling and uneven grain patterns. This type of wood is not available from most commercial wood outlets, which generally stock clear, straight-grained wood. Instead, I visit mills, lumber yards and other sources to find cast-off wood in which the lumber industry has little or no interest. For me, this is authentic wood, wood with powerful character and capable of telling the strongest and most vivid stories."
